CHAPTER 9

AURORA

I made sure Anna stayed upstairs with Michael in his bedroom the next night by seven pm before our guests arrived. I called my two best servers, Miguel and Andres, to serve cocktails. My good friend, Santino, or Sonny Vitali, a fabulous chef who had owned an Italian restaurant in Washington, DC, was kind enough to whip up some delicious light appetizers at the last minute.

I wore a red dress that was very low cut, which would gain the attention of Dane and everyone else’s eyes that night. Dane looked like the Devil himself, dressed all in black, including his tie. Donnie DeLuca arrived an hour later with his entourage of men, all dressed in sharp suits. Nolan Reynolds came with Push and Brody Huntsman a little while after. Dane’s capo, Carlo, arrived alone, and I glared right at him, daring him to light up one of those foul-smelling cigars in the mansion like he did at my beach house.

A stretch limo arrived with my girls, Desiree, Candace, Loren, Lyla, and Tamika. They were all dressed sexy and sophisticated, knowing exactly how to work their clientele of wealthy businessmen and politicians. Desiree caught the eyes of every man there, with her deep brown skin and long cornrows flowing over her bare shoulders; some of the braids were the color of copper. She was dressed to kill – in a form-fitting, purple dress that hugged every part of her curvy body.

I gave them all warm embraces, and we all struggled to hold back tears. I introduced them all to Dane first, then to all the other men, and lastly, Donnie DeLuca. The night was going well, and Dane kept it light, not closing himself in the office with the men to talk business.

Miguel and Andres kept the cocktails coming to all the guests, and soon I had already had several glasses of wine. I came to stand next to Dane as he talked with Donnie and Desiree.

Dane wrapped his arm around my waist and leaned into me. “You in that dress is driving me fucking insane. I’m going to have you out of it later tonight.” He whispered, making my stomach flutter.

“I can hardly wait,” I whispered back, kissing him. “Now, let me go check on Anna and Michael.”

I left the living room and made my way upstairs to Michael’s bedroom. I slowly opened the door a crack to see the TV was on. Anna and Michael were lying in his bed sleeping. They’d been watching “The Lion King,” one of Michael’s favorites that he’d watched countless times before. I entered the room and clicked the TV off with the remote on the bedside table. Michael was lying on his side with Anna spooning him, her arm draped over his little shoulders, hugging him close. I stood there watching them sleeping so peacefully and brushed my fingers lightly through Michael’s dark hair.

I left the room and closed the door quietly. I made my way back down the stairs to get myself another glass of wine from Miguel and stopped.
